156216 - A New Hole-Down-Array Design for Airfoil Separation Control
This research investigates the possibility of passive flow control via a hole down array (HDA) motivated by nature in the observation of gaps between the feathers of flying birds. We employ numerical simulation along experimental wind tunnel testing to examine how HDA affect the NACA0012 airfoil/wing. We tested HDA with one and two rows of down holes located towards the trailing edge. The purpose of the study is to analyze such new design options together with their abilities to improve efficiency. The aerodynamic coefficients are calculated through computational fluid dynamics and simulation results are validated by experimental wind tunnel testing. The outcomes are promissing and the results show that such new configurations can increase the lift while maintaing or even decreasing the corresponding drag, while depending on the angle of attack, the maximum lift to drag ratio dropped up to 50% compared to the original design.
In the current boom in the aviation industry together with the direction to a general cleaner (”greener”) and sustainable future, manufacturers worldwide aim to increase efficiency. Latest generation aircraft have more efficient wings with a high lift-to-drag ratio to reduce fuel consumption and thus make the operation more profitable. The list of techniques that are used to increase the efficiency of wings is long and continuously growing. However, the desire to increase efficiency is from being limited to the aviation industry and in fact goes far beyond it.
