137656 - A Multiscale Approach to the Design and Analysis of Weav3d Lattice Structures
Abstract: WEAV3D composite lattice structures called “rebar for plastics”® (www.weav3D.com) are a unique solution for lightweighting composite parts. As these unique material structures are finding increased structural applications in all industries, the need for a robust, verified, design and analysis methodology for these material structures has become evident. Discretely modeling the lattice structures, while accurate, is not practical for large scale structures. Therefore, a multiscale modeling technique, where the lattice structures are homogenized into an equivalent anisotropic shell formulation, has been proposed and derived. This multiscale formulation was developed at Altair Engineering in coordination with the University of Washington. The multiscale formulation will be presented along with analytical verification against explicit modeling of the same for in-plane, 3pt-bending, and thermally loaded specimens. In addition, an experimental properties and validation test plan has been developed, which is currently being performed. While results of the experimental testing will not be available at the time of this presentation, an overview of the test plan and further validation efforts will be presented to conclude.

Jeff oversees the Composites Technology team within Altair which includes Altair Multiscale Designer™, Altair ESAComp™, and all Altair HyperWorks™ composites capabilities. Jeff is also an Affiliate Associate Professor at the University of Washington teaching Composite Design I & II and Additive Manufacturing 500 level courses.
