110797 - Passive Non-Invasive Nondestructive Testing Method Based on Environmental Noise in Bionic Aircraft
Aircrafts usually work in complex environments and under tough conditions, which may lead to unpredictable structural damages, and then degrade the overall performance of the aircrafts. Timely identification of structural damage and efficient structural health monitoring can eliminate hidden dangers, ensuring the normal operation of aircraft, and reducing the loss of life and property. At present, active detection of damage has been intensively employed for the structural health monitoring. However, the active method is not applicable when the monitoring object is not disassembled. On the other hand, the passive detection method using the aerodynamic noise in flight of aircraft as the noise source has the potential in fault detection without intrusion.
In this paper, based on a gull-like aircraft with variable swept-back wings, the environmental noise generated by wing vibration during flight is used as a passive noise source to detect wing damage during flight. First, the flow-induced structural vibrations of the wing are measured by several sensors installed on the wing. Then, the Green's function is estimated by the cross-correlation function between a couple of sensors. Finally, guided wave imaging is used to localize and quantify structural damages.
The proposed method realizes the real-time monitoring and damage identification of aircraft structure during flight with less intrusion.
