110778 - The Effect of the Shape of a Wind Farm on Its Power Generation Efficiency
Wind energy has become an increasingly important source of renewable energy in recent years, with wind farms being built all over the world. In a tireless pursuit of affordability, significant progress has been made in optimizing the cost of wind power through innovative approaches, such as optimizing the layout of wind farms and revolutionizing the design of airfoils. However, the shape of a wind farm also plays a significant role in determining its power generation efficiency, since subsequent layout optimizations are based on this. The present study delves into the impact of the farm's shape on its power generation efficiency, providing a comprehensive examination of this crucial aspect. This study adopts a validated framework for calculating wind farm power, incorporating Ishihara's analytical wake model and coupling both the Greedy algorithm and Genetic algorithm into the framework to determine the optimal power efficiency for different farm shapes. Our preliminary findings indicate that wind farm shape does have a significant impact on power efficiency, but the effect can vary based on local wind conditions and turbine size. Hence, this study focuses on examining the relationship between wind farm shape and power generation efficiency in a range of typical wind conditions. The results can contribute to the development of more efficient wind energy systems in the future.
